Did you know?
South Baltimore’s other elementary/middle schools, Federal Hill Preparatory School and Thomas Johnson Elementary/Middle School, are outgrowing their spaces. Thomas Johnson currently has approximately 120 middle school students-- almost at capacity, and Federal Hill Prep’s building is not set up to include middle grades. There are also no sixth grade entry points at these schools for middle school students.
Francis Scott Key on the other hand has the facility and the capacity to be a top middle school—and right here in South Baltimore. In 1921, FSK was built as a middle school, complete with numerous surrounding athletic fields. Currently it has the capacity to accommodate 450 students but is only 65% full.
Building support across all of the South Baltimore Peninsula for making Francis Scott Key the top middle school in Baltimore City will allow the school to financially support itself (per pupil funding under fair student funding) rather than being supported by accompanying elementary school grades. Roland Park Elementary/Middle School is an example of a top Baltimore City middle school and a Blue Ribbon school that was “created” by the community working with teachers and administration to bring unique opportunities to its students--and having a critical mass of students attend.
